Moon Rituals: What to Do During Each Phase of the Lunar Cycle
The moon moves through eight phases every 29.5 days. Each one is an invitation to a different kind of inner work.
The ancients knew what we are remembering: the moon is a calendar of feeling. Its 29.5-day cycle is the rhythm of internal life — when to begin, when to push, when to release, when to rest. Here is what each phase asks of you.
New Moon — Plant the seed
The dark moon is the void before creation. This is when you set intentions for the cycle ahead. Write them down. Be specific. Don't share them yet.
Waxing Crescent — Take the first step
Now the small actions. Send the email. Make the call. Show up to the first class. The seed needs light.
First Quarter — Push through resistance
This is the test. The universe will hand you the first obstacle. Push.
Waxing Gibbous — Refine
You're close. This is where you adjust, edit, soften, sharpen. Trust the work.
Full Moon — Celebrate and release
Everything is illuminated. Whatever you planted has bloomed (or visibly failed). Celebrate the harvest. Release what didn't grow. Do not start anything new.
Waning Gibbous — Give thanks
The moon is fading. Now you reflect on what you learned, and you share it. Teach someone. Write the story down.
Last Quarter — Forgive
The hardest phase. Forgive who needs forgiving, including yourself. Cut what no longer fits.
Waning Crescent — Rest
The slate is being wiped clean. Sleep more. Read fiction. Take baths. The next cycle begins soon.
The Practice
You don't have to do anything elaborate. Light a candle. Write three sentences. Notice what feels different. The moon is not asking for performance — only attention.
